The mackerel commonly targeted along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast is the Pacific sierra (Scomberomorus sierra). It is a streamlined coastal predator recognized by its silvery body, spotted flanks and mouthful of cutting teeth.
Sierra often travel in schools and feed on small fish and squid in the upper water column. Is Pacific sierra the same as Spanish mackerel?
It is often called sierra or Spanish mackerel locally, but the eastern Pacific species targeted here is Scomberomorus sierra. The Atlantic Spanish mackerel is a different species.
