Why anglers love Costa Rica’s mahi-mahi

Dorado (Coryphaena hippurus) are instantly recognizable by their electric blue, green, gold and silver colors. They grow quickly, travel through warm offshore water and frequently gather where currents concentrate bait.

Once hooked, a dorado may sprint across the surface and leap repeatedly. That visible, active fight makes the species exciting for experienced anglers, families and first-time offshore guests alike.

  • Colorful offshore game fish
  • Fast runs and aerial jumps
  • Aggressive feeding behavior
  • Trolling and casting methods

Follow structure, current and feeding activity

Dorado are open-water fish, but they often relate to floating objects and areas where bait becomes concentrated.

Floating Debris

Logs, branches and natural debris may shelter baitfish, creating a small offshore ecosystem that attracts dorado.

Weed Lines

Lines of floating vegetation can mark current edges and provide structure in otherwise open water.

Trolling

Ballyhoo, feathers, plugs and other lures cover water while the crew searches productive temperature and color changes.

Live Bait

A carefully presented live bait can draw an aggressive strike when dorado are visible or holding near structure.

Pitch Baits

When fish appear behind the boat, a ready bait can be cast directly to them for a visual hook-up.

Artificial Casting

Poppers, jigs and bright lures give active anglers a chance to target fish around debris or feeding schools.

Fishing season

When is dorado fishing best near Jaco?

Dorado may be caught throughout the year, but Central Pacific opportunity generally improves during the green season. Rain washes branches and other natural material into the ocean, and offshore currents organize debris and bait into productive lines.

May through November is a useful planning window, with September through November often associated with larger fish. These are general tendencies—not guarantees—and recent reports should guide final expectations.

Planning the day

How to improve your dorado fishing experience

Book Enough Time

Dorado move with offshore conditions. A full day gives the captain more range and time to search current edges and floating structure.

  • More offshore search time
  • Greater flexibility
  • Better multi-species potential

Use an Offshore Boat

Choose a boat with suitable range, safety equipment, electronics and tackle for the expected itinerary and sea conditions.

  • Reliable engine configuration
  • Marine navigation equipment
  • Professional fishing tackle

Keep the Plan Flexible

Dorado fishing may become a tuna, sailfish or mixed-offshore trip when conditions and recent reports favor another opportunity.

  • Discuss priority species
  • Let the crew adapt
  • Enjoy every offshore encounter
Responsible fishing

Make good use of every dorado retained

Selective Harvest

Dorado are commonly kept for food when current rules allow. Responsible fishing means taking a reasonable amount and releasing fish your group will not use.

  • Discuss your needs with the captain
  • Keep only a practical quantity
  • Follow current Costa Rican regulations
  • Avoid waste

Catch Care

Prompt, clean handling protects the quality of mahi-mahi. Ask the crew how fish will be chilled, cleaned, bagged and transported after the trip.

  • Ice retained fish promptly
  • Clean and process carefully
  • Transport fillets safely
  • Ask about local restaurant preparation

Dorado fishing FAQ

Are dorado and mahi-mahi the same fish?

Yes. Dorado, mahi-mahi and dolphinfish are common names for Coryphaena hippurus. They are not related to dolphins.

What is the best season near Jaco?

Dorado are possible year-round, but May through November generally provides stronger opportunity. September through November can be particularly interesting for larger fish.

Should we book a half day or full day?

A full day is recommended because it gives the crew more time and range to locate offshore debris, weed lines, bait and current changes.

Can beginners catch dorado?

Yes. Their visual strikes and aerial fights make dorado exciting for beginners, while larger fish still challenge experienced anglers.

Can we keep the fish?

Dorado can generally be retained for food when regulations allow. Keep only what your group will use and ask the crew about cleaning and safe handling.

Is catching dorado guaranteed?

No. Dorado are wild, highly mobile fish. The crew can provide appropriate equipment and local knowledge, but no ethical operator can guarantee a catch.
